After a stint in the Welsh Guards, and as a engineer for Rolls Royce, Lord Avebury entered Parliament as MP for Orpington. With a 22% victory swing, the then Eric Lubbock set about what was seen as a political revival for the Liberal Party.

Though he lost his seat in 1970, Lubbock soon gained the title of Lord Avebury, and quickly founded the Parliamentary Human Rights Group, which he chaired for twenty one years. Lord Avebury’s interest in human rights have shone through a number of times, and he is a strong supporter of citizenship rights to British minorities in Hong Kong, as well as the Co-Chair of a Commission working with the Bangladeshi Government. Lord Avebury’s connection to the East is so strong, he is in fact a Buddhist.

Even though Lord Avebury is eighty fours years of age, he still cycles to the House of Lords from his home in Camberwell in seventeen minutes! You can read his personal blog here: http://www.ericavebury.blogspot.co.uk/
